Over two million seniors have been dropped by their HMO in the past two years. Insurance companies say that the government doesn't reimburse them enough, even though they receive more per capita than seniors in traditional Medicare. In other words, this segment of the population, the elderly, are not profitable enough for them. Worse, many of these seniors dropped their Medigap insurance when they were lured in to joining Medicare+Choice HMOs. Repurchasing Medigap policies is now more expensive but seniors have little choice, particularly if they need a pharmaceutical benefit.
